How Search Engines Work

Think about how and why Google was originally built.  It started as a Ph.D research project that developed as an off-shoot of the Stanford University Digital Library Project, whose goal was to provide “uniform access to information sources.”

It was designed as the ultimate library search tool – a way to find and rank academic articles, documents and other information sources that were the most relevant to a particular word or phrase, now commonly known as “keywords”.

The more an article was cited (today’s “links”) as a credible resource on the topic by other reliable articles, then its authority also increased, along with its ranking in the search results.  The algorithm also took into account the relevancy of the article, and whether the key phrase was used in the title or heading.

Google changes its algorithm approximately 500 times a year – which is roughly twice each working day of the year! (Here are some of the recent updates) . However it remains clear that no matter what updates are made to Google’s secret sauce, the core components never change:

  • Make your pages relevant for the keywords you are targeting.
  • Leave no doubt in the users mind what the page content is about.
  • Gain links from authoritative, relevant sources.
  • Demonstrate yourself as an authority on your keyword topic.
